Introduction to School of Mathematics, Jilin University

The School of Mathematics (Department of Mathematics) of Jilin University is an important teaching and scientific research training base for mathematics research and application talents in our country, and it is among the first batches in the strategic layout of every major discipline in the country. When the departments of universities across the country were adjusted in 1952, the state selected 14 teachers from some key universities such as Peking University and Tsinghua University to form and establish the former Department of Mathematics of Jilin University. In 1978, the Institute of Mathematics of Jilin University was established with the approval of the former State Education Commission. In 2001, the former Jilin University, the former Jilin University of Technology, the former Changchun University of Science and Technology, the former Bethune Medical University, and the former Changchun College of Posts and Telecommunications were merged to form the Mathematics College of Jilin University. In 2014, the former Mathematics Department of the Agricultural Department of Jilin University Formally merged into the School of Mathematics of Jilin University. Famous mathematicians such as Academician Wang Xianghao, Professor Jiang Zejian, Professor Xu Lizhi, Professor Xie Bangjie, Professor Wang Rouhuai, and Professor Sun Yifeng have taught in the former Department of Mathematics of Jilin University.

   The School of Mathematics has four undergraduate majors: Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Information and Computing Science, Statistics and Financial Mathematics, covering three first-class disciplines: Mathematics, Statistics and Economics. At the same time, a minor major of "Actuarial Insurance" (a bachelor's degree in economics awarded) was opened.

    In 1981, Pure Mathematics and Computational Mathematics became the first authorized doctoral authorization point in my country. In 1987, both Basic Mathematics and Computational Mathematics became the first batch of national key disciplines. The former Department of Mathematics of Jilin University became the first batch of national post-doctoral research mobile stations in 1988, the first batch of national "Science basic scientific research and teaching talent training bases" in 1991, and the first batch of "Scientific research and teaching talent training bases" in 2001. "National excellent talent training base" was officially listed in 2002, and the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of "Symbolic computing and knowledge engineering" was jointly established with the School of Computer in 1993. In 1998, it was approved by the state as a first-class discipline doctoral degree in mathematics. It is supported by the national "211" key discipline construction and the "985 Project" project. In 2007, the subject of mathematics became a first-level national key subject. In the same year, the majors of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Information and Computing Science became the specialty construction point of colleges and universities in Jilin Province, and Mathematics and Applied Mathematics became the first type of national specialty. In 2011, the Statistics Department of the School of Mathematics became the first batch of doctoral programs of first-level disciplines in statistics in the country. In 2014, the Department of Statistics was rated as a key discipline with advantages and characteristics in the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" of Jilin Province. In 2017, the subject of mathematics was selected into the ranks of the national "Double First Class" discipline construction.   

The School of Mathematics has achieved remarkable results in scientific research and teaching. Since 1982, it has won 3 National Natural Science Awards, 1 National Science and Technology Progress Award, 2 Natural Science Awards of the Ministry of Education, 14 Science and Technology Progress Awards of the former State Education Commission and Ministry of Education, and 6 other provincial and ministerial science and technology awards; 1 National Excellent Teaching Achievement Special Award, 1 National Excellent Textbook Award, 4 Excellent Textbook Award of the former State Education Commission, 27 Provincial and Ministerial Excellent Textbook Awards, undertaking 5 Famous Brand Course Projects of Ministry of Education Bases, publishing 42 national planned textbooks, 5 textbooks for the 21st century, and 1 national new century online course project. The School of Mathematics has a strong faculty, with 63 professors, 48 doctoral supervisors, and 63 associate professors, including 2 dual-employed academicians, 3 winners of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, and winners of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, 1 young scholar of Major Talents Project of Ministry of Education, 3 candidates for the overseas high-level talent introduction program, 1 national-level teaching teacher, 1 member of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, Honorary Professor (fellow of the Royal Society, academician of the European Academy of Sciences), 1 national winner of "Hundred Articles Excellent Blog", 11 cross-century/new century talents of the Ministry of Education, 3 members of the Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, 4 famous teachers of Jilin Province, 5 "Changbai Mountain Scholars" of Jilin Province.

     The School of Mathematics began to set up the "Base Class" in 1991, to the establishment of "Tang Aoqing Experimental Class" in 2009, and then to the establishment of "Strong Base Class". With 30 years of teaching practice, it has accumulated rich experience in training excellent talents and formed Unique talent training system with "solid foundation, solid knowledge, solid character, broad vision, strong stamina". Based on the training concept of "small classes, tutorial system, and internationalization", the "honors program system" for outstanding talents has been established. By optimizing the curriculum system, broadening the subject foundation, strengthening international exchanges, and strengthening scientific research training, a large number of professionals in mathematics have been trained, including 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences: Academician Dong Yunmei, Academician Fang Fuquan, Academician Dai Yongjiu; 6 well-known university presidents and more than 30 university vice presidents; more than 100 national talents. In the past 70 years, it has delivered more than 10,000 outstanding talents to national scientific research institutions, universities, government agencies, large enterprises, military units and high-tech companies.

   The School of Mathematics of Jilin University has a red revolutionary gene, a strong faculty, and a strong academic atmosphere. It is a sacred place for mathematics research and training in the northeast. Generations of mathematicians have worked hard to achieve the goal of a world-class subject.
